Wren restarts her training under Ahsoka and Huyang’s guidance as she struggles with her inability to use the Force. Syndulla meets with Mon Mothma, the Chancellor of the New Republic, and a group of influential senators in order to gain permission to send Republic forces to Seatos. Despite Mothma’s support, the senators refuse to believe that Thrawn and Bridger are alive and deny Syndulla’s request. Having been informed of this by Syndulla, Ahsoka, Wren, and Huyang travel to Seatos where they discover the Eye of Sion, but are intercepted by a squadron of fighters led by Hati and Marrok as Elsbeth uses the lasers on the Eye of Sion to fire on them. The group escapes by flying through a pod of Purrgil and land on the surface of Seatos where they take refuge in the forest as Huyang gives his full analysis on the Eye of Sion which he classifies as a Hyperjump Gate. However, Hati is aware that they are hiding somewhere in the forest. As a result, Skoll dispatches his forces to hunt them down.

Introduction

Welcome, fellow Star Wars enthusiasts, I’m MJ, and today we’re diving deep into the third episode of the Ahsoka series, aptly titled “Time to Fly.” As always, you can find my work on my website, MJMunoz.com, where I explore everything from books to anime, comics to tokusatsu, and of course, the galaxy far, far away. So, without further ado, let’s embark on this fully operational Star Wars analysis!

Unveiling the Episode

In this episode, we join Ahsoka and her companion Sabine on their continuing journey through the galaxy. Directed by Steph Green and written by none other than Dave Filoni, the mastermind behind many beloved Star Wars stories, this installment brings us insights into both characters’ growth and the broader universe.

Establishing Shots: A Star Wars Staple

Before delving into the episode itself, I want to touch upon the cinematography and the use of establishing shots. These iconic shots are a hallmark of Star Wars, evoking a sense of wonder and setting the stage for epic space adventures. If you’ve been following my journey through Ahsoka’s world on my Disney+ streaming series, you’ve likely heard me gush about these shots before. They hark back to the old serials and contribute to the distinct Star Wars feel.

The Master-Padawan Dynamic: Echoes and Repeats

Now, let’s delve into the heart of the episode. One theme that caught my attention is the recurring dynamic between master and Padawan. As Ahsoka takes on the role of a mentor, I couldn’t help but notice echoes of the past, particularly from Star Wars Rebels. It’s intriguing to see characters like Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren struggling with their training under Jedi Padawans who themselves didn’t complete their own training. This parallel raises questions about the direction of Ahsoka’s story, with some fans wondering if it’s erasing the uniqueness of Rebels.

Ahsoka’s Unconventional Teaching

Despite my concerns about these parallels, I find Ahsoka’s approach to teaching truly captivating. Her unorthodox methods stem from her own journey as an incomplete Jedi who walked away from the Order. Ahsoka’s faith in people’s inherent potential over formal qualifications is a refreshing perspective, echoing in many ways the countercultural spirit that Star Wars has often embraced. It’s a reminder that one doesn’t necessarily need official recognition to be heroic or make a difference.

Training with the Force: Anger and Mastery

One highlight of the episode is the training session between Ahsoka and Sabine, where the complexities of using the Force come to the forefront. Ahsoka’s lesson about anger and frustration is a pivotal moment. She emphasizes that these emotions can provide power but also throw one off balance, ultimately leading to failure. This wisdom captures the essence of Jedi philosophy and the delicate balance they must maintain.

Connections and Puzzles: Jason Syndulla and Intergalactic Travel

The episode unveils some intriguing connections to the broader Star Wars universe. The appearance of Jason Syndulla, the son of Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, raises questions about his role in the galaxy’s future. Additionally, the exploration of intergalactic travel through the Pergill presents fascinating possibilities. This natural hyperspace travel phenomenon connects the galaxies in unexpected ways, offering a glimpse into the intricate web of the Star Wars galaxy.

Political Commentary and Galactic Realities

Nestled within the adventure and character dynamics, the episode offers a subtle political commentary on the state of the New Republic. The reluctance of senators to engage in military action for fear of repeating past mistakes mirrors real-world political dynamics. It’s a reminder that peace often requires difficult decisions and proactive measures, a theme deeply embedded in the Star Wars universe.

Concluding Thoughts: A Mixed Bag of Emotions

As we conclude this analysis, I’m left with a mix of emotions. While the episode had its moments of brilliance, some concerns about repetition persist. The intricate dynamics between characters, the philosophical underpinnings of Ahsoka’s teachings, and the tantalizing hints at future developments keep me engaged and eager for more. And of course, the undeniable thrill of seeing starfighters in aerial combat, a quintessential Star Wars experience, makes this episode a satisfying addition to the franchise.
