Grobug Tales: HARMONY 1+ |10 Minute Drawing

MJ took 10 minutes to draw this. Harmony is a character in the Grobug Tales Kid books. Last time he drew Rex, Harmony got a quick sketch.

In the upcoming third book of my Grobug Tales children’s series, a character named Harmony gains a magical armor suit with help from her Grobug friend. As an author and artist, visualizing this super-powered suit posed an exciting creative challenge.

I took initial inspiration from my daughter, who envisioned a very princess-like ballgown design. While pretty, it didn’t quite fit my vision for Harmony. I wanted something more akin to the sleekness of a ballerina with the flair of a superhero.

Looking at classic Disney princesses like Snow White, I really liked the look of the sleeves puffing out at the shoulders. This gave me the idea to create a bolero-style top for Harmony with little curled antennas sprouting up. I also gave her a half-mask to complete the superhero-ballerina fusion.

Blending anime, tokusatsu, and fairy tale influences resulted in a Harmony costume that was both cute and heroic. My daughter may not have loved my design as much as her own, but that’s often the way creativity goes – you have to trust your own vision. Harmony’s magical girl armor turned out OK, but I will need to keep tweaking it.

Let me know what you think of my design process and feel free to share your own character creations. Artistic passion starts with imagination. Mine led me to conjure up a very special suit for Harmony. Where will your creativity take you?
