Tut strained for control as he was pulled by his own Light ARMS. Beak and talon streaked to close around him. A moment later, twin cords of light sagged and dimmed until they blinked out in the mist. Tut rolled out of the way and shot out another Light Arm, this time in the form of a wide beam. The Mockwing crashed into the barrier and banked along its curved surface.

The Importance of Consistent Terminology in Fantasy Writing

My “Light Arms” Dilemma

So I’m writing this big fantasy battle scene in my middle grade series Grobug Tales. The bug characters use these cool magical glowing arm-like appendages called “light arms” to fight. It’s a central power in the story.

Is My Terminology Clear Enough?

But when I re-read the scene, I realized my language around the light arms is kind of inconsistent. At one point I considered calling stronger versions “heavy arms.” But that feels too literal. I also used “shining arms” and “radiant arms” as variants. There are pros and cons to each word choice.

Clarifying My Fantasy Vocabulary

My goal is to nail down succinct terms that conjure vivid imagery. This example shows why having a series bible with glossaries is so useful when worldbuilding! I don’t want to overwhelm readers, but some unique vocabulary helps with immersion.

The Importance of Consistency

I may tweak “light arms” more as I edit, or replace it entirely. But cementing the key terminology early on will help readers visualize the abilities consistently throughout the story. Consistency plus creativity in language brings fantasy worlds to life!

What Do You Think?

What are your thoughts on balancing unique vocabulary vs. clarity when writing fantasy? Let me know in the comments! I’m always looking to improve my ability to build compelling fantasy worlds.
