Evolving a Character Design

Finding Inspiration in Nature

As an artist, I love drawing inspiration from the natural world. Recently, I was sketching a moth-themed superhero character. Moths are so cool with their metamorphosis from worm to chrysalis to winged insect. I was also looking at luna moths and gypsy moths for visual reference.

Starting Simple

My initial sketches were pretty basic – just a standard superhero outfit with a mask and some moth wings added. But I wanted to push the concept further.

Looking to the Masters

I referred back to original designs by the legendary manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, who pioneered the “henshin” (transforming) hero genre. Studying how he rendered details like boots, gloves, and helmets sparked new ideas.

Pushing the Design

I started elaborating on the costume, drawing inspiration directly from moth anatomy. What if the wings were worked into the sleeves? How could the patterns on the body emulate scales and segments? I played with bold, discombobulated shapes.

Bringing in Other Influences

I also incorporated some personal favorite elements like a Snow White-esque bolero jacket with poofy sleeves. And my daughter’s original “chrysalis” boot concept evolved as I tweaked the shape and proportions.

Refining the Final Product

By really leaning into the moth theme, I ended up with a much more original and cohesive character design compared to my initial sketches. Studying nature and classic works helps level up any creative project.

Let me know what you think of the design evolution! I had fun bugging out on this one.
