Designing Original Characters and Creatures
Finding Inspiration in the Classics
I’m working on illustrations for my middle grade book Grobug Tales that involves a new set of creature: CritterBots. It involves kids entering a video game world filled with robotic animal creatures. This concept definitely takes inspiration from classics like Pokémon and Digimon.
Defining Distinctive Features
When creating my own original critters, I wanted to give them a unified aesthetic. Digimon is brilliant in how a simple stylized eye shape became central to the brand. So I played around with eye designs to find a look that pops.
Aiming for Diversity
Variety is also key – I’m making critters based on different animals and elements. So far I have an owl, tiger, dinosaur, and plant creature. Vastly different body types and abilities helps them stand apart.
