Blog Version
If, like me, you grew up getting delicious goosebumps from the spine-tingling adventures churned out by ol’ R.L. himself, then horror scribe Squall Charlson should already be on your radar. His new book series “Terror Valley” aims to bathe readers in equal parts nostalgia and fresh horror as today’s troubled times demand.
I recently had the chilling pleasure of sitting down with Squall to slice into the guts of his new installment following young lass Remy, who unwittingly enrolls herself into a small town’s twisted, undead martial arts cult. Throughout our conversation, his passion for recapturing the magic of those classic goosebump stories shone through.
Squall cited Cobra Kai as an inspiration for this story. What if there were Karate Zombies? He wanted to blend action, mystery and horror in this story. He dove into his methods of carefully calibrating the perfect levels of each to leave readers sleeping with one eye open. We also discussed his scalpel-like use of perspective, voice and pacing to ratchet up investment in characters like Remy and her misfit pal Chuck.
Squall explained how he has plans to steadily increase the scare factor book by book, transitioning from sci-fi to action to full-on horror in the culminating third entry.
So there you have it folks – Terror Valley is just getting warmed up. And if Squall stays true to his vision, we’re in for a gloriously ghoulish treat. Just make sure those goosebumps are coming from his books – not something lurking behind you!
