My Man Claude

Blog Version of Transcript, written by Claude AI.

In this 20 minute writing session update from February 15th, 2024, I, author MJ Muñoz, explain that I ended up going a few minutes longer than my usual 10 minute writing spurts. I share a condensed version of myself writing for 20 straight minutes as an example of the writing and rewriting process.

I openly admit to using the AI assistant Claude to help generate ideas and content for the book I am currently working on. Specifically, I asked Claude to develop abilities, traits, and descriptions for four characters called the Critterbot Guardians. These characters will interact with the book’s protagonist, Hopper the Growbuug, to help reveal aspects of Hopper’s personality and backstory as he navigates a new world with lost memories.

While Claude provided some initial technical ideas, I realized I wanted to simplify the abilities down to core concepts that fit the softer magic system and lighthearted tone of my middle grade book. For example, one character named CinderStripe can shoot fireballs, swipe enemies with fiery claws, jet propel himself forward, and create flame walls – but the exact temperature specifics are unimportant.

I explain my iterative creative process of generating ideas with Claude, revising and rejecting concepts that don’t align with my vision, and combining the stronger ideas into quick reference guides for the characters. I am still actively putting in creative work developing plots, arcs and personalities. The AI is simply an idea amplifier, saving time while allowing me to steer the direction.

I conclude by affirming I will continue utilizing Claude and other AI tools to assist with my writing, despite some questioning why I don’t just write everything myself. I believe it helps accelerate my productivity like an Edison having someone show him failed lightbulb designs first. I remain committed to keep plugging away at this and other books, and will share updates on their progress and release at my website.
