Pushing Through Writing Challenges and Refusing to Wait for Inspiration

Rewritten from transcript by Claude (https://www.anthropic.com)

As an author chronicling my creative journey, I believe in the power of transparency and sharing the ups and downs. In this 10-minute writing session from March 3rd, 2024, I faced some intense external pressures that hindered my productivity on my chapter book in progress. The word count ended up embarrassingly low, leaving me frustrated.

But setbacks are part of the process, especially when you’re an aspiring career writer like myself. Recently my dad asked about my life plans, and I confidently told him I intend to write professionally. That means pushing through resistance, even when the muse feels distant. Dedication matters more than inspiration.

I’ve never bought into the romantic notion of waiting around for an artistic breakthrough. Churning out words is a blue collar job – you clock in and get it done through hard work, determination and grit. Currently, I’m quite literally living my authorial life 10 minutes at a time, squeezing in mini writing sprints whenever possible. Is it ideal? No, but it’s necessary.

I’ve learned the hard way that skipping too many days wreaks havoc on my creative momentum and mood. Consistency is key, and every time I’ve let myself miss two sessions in a row, I’ve paid the price emotionally. Now I’m adamant about refusing to skip again, though I know I’ll likely stumble again somewhere along this marathon.

But that’s okay, because falling in the creative pursuit is inevitable – the important part is that you keep picking yourself back up and soldiering on. So that’s what I’ll do, day by day, paragraph by paragraph. I hope by candidly sharing my imperfect process, I can encourage others wrestling with their own artistic goals. We’re all works in progress!

Let me know in the comments – how do you persevere with your writing or other creative projects when motivation wanes and life gets in the way? I’m always looking for new tips and tactics to add to my arsenal. one of the best parts of being a creator is connecting with others on the same path.

If you’re hungry for more peeks behind the scenes of my writing life, or looking to dive into some bookish and geeky discussions, cruise over to my website. I’ve got plenty of stories, reviews and artwork to keep you busy until my next update on this project. See you in the next session!
