In this very special slice of two-fisted pulp justice with all the trimmings, we tip our fedoras to the great Will Eisner and the classic Christmas stories he wrote for his much-loved Mystery Man “The Spirit”, and in so doing, turn 1930’s Toronto on its ear! Red Panda Adventures Episode 30 Analysis: A Very Merry Harry
Hey there, pulp action fans! It’s MJ here, your friendly neighborhood author, artist, and analyzer. Welcome to the Red Panda Report, where we’re diving into the terrific twosome of Toronto’s adventures. Today, we’re unwrapping Episode 30, “Tis the Season,” which originally aired on December 1st, 2007.
A Christmas Special with a Twist
Despite my personal feelings about Christmas, this episode has joined the ranks of Die Hard, Gremlins, Ron Howard’s The Grinch and A Christmas Story as holiday-themed stories I genuinely enjoy. Greg Taylor’s storytelling prowess shines through, making this a standout episode.
Unique Storytelling Technique
What sets this episode apart is its narrative style. The entire story is told in verse, reminiscent of “The Night Before Christmas.” Steven Burley’s narration elevates the already impressive writing, showcasing the talents of the Decoder Ring Theatre team.
Character Spotlight: Harry Kelly
This episode focuses on Harry Kelly, an agent of the Red Panda. We get to see his career progression and his personal struggles as he balances his duties with his desire to sing for his mother at a Christmas event.
Themes and Plot
The story revolves around a plot to steal Christmas gifts meant for orphans. It touches on themes of justice, doing the right thing, and the spirit of giving. We also get insights into the Red Panda’s motivations and Kit’s influence on his actions.
Production Value
The voice acting in this episode is top-notch, with Shannon Arnold delivering a standout performance as Harry Kelly. The entire cast manages to deliver the rhyming dialogue seamlessly, which is no small feat.
Easter Eggs for Fans
There’s a fun interlude during the episode’s break that gives listeners a peek behind the curtain at Decoder Ring Theatre’s personalities. It’s a nice touch that adds to the overall charm of the production.
Final Thoughts
While this episode might not add significantly to the overall Red Panda lore, it’s an incredibly enjoyable and well-crafted story. It showcases Gregg Taylor’s versatility as a writer and the talent of the entire Decoder Ring Theatre team.
