Day 2 – Woven| #Tokutember2020

In years past, I haven’t done much dynamic work. I want to change that this year. This is supposed to represent the character transforming. Woven got me thinking of ancient times, so I thought it would be neat to make a character who would fit into a period-piece tokusatsu. It worked for Lion Maru and Henshin Ninja Arashi, right? So this robed person has this basket that contains this power to become someone else, to become something else. They open it up and the transformation occurs: smoke comes out of the basket and envelops them, their appearance changes and they grow in size and shape to become a powerful being to fight evil!

I threw the basket on the head to finish off the look as a lark. Why not, right? This is my creation, I can do whatever I want with it. Is it meant to be goofy and silly? Not really. It was more because I wanted to keep the basket in there to emphasize the prompt. I don’t know if anyone else would consider the leg wrappings to be woven as well, but I added that detail to sell it as well. My only regret is not making the basket have a more unique look to it that would have served as a type of face for the character. The stuff in the upper right margin were ideas for basket patterns, but it didn’t like any one enough to use it. The basket does make me chuckle, but I’m laughing with it, not at it.

I want to do at least more transformation image. I will also try to make more thumbnails and rough sketches for anyone who clicks through… also, that should make for a better finished product.

Keep coming back as I tackle the rest of the prompts throughout September. I am determined to make it every day this year!

Looking over all these prompts has my wheels spinning and I really want to make a little toku-inspired project for kids. I am thinking something about health. Maybe three little adventures in a single book with a team composed of an homage to Sentai, Rider and Ultra. I don’t really draw cute, so I would love to chat with a more versatile illustrator who would be interested in working together.
