Before we begin, I forgot to mention the SNEEZE! That was imaginative, cute and fun. I also liked that a lot. Now into my less than glowing review… of Ultraman Arc episode 2. While the show continues to intrigue me, I have some mixed feelings about this latest installment.
First, let’s address the elephant in the room: Arc’s new weapon. The eyeglass slasher sword feels like a rehash, reminiscent of designs we’ve seen in Kamen Rider Ghost, DonBrothers, and Go-Busters. For a character with such a streamlined design, this accessory feels out of place and unnecessarily goofy.
I was hoping Arc’s upgrades would lean more into special effects and imagination-based powers, like the shield-breaking move from the previous episode. This approach could have maintained the simplicity of Arc’s design while still offering exciting merchandising opportunities.
However, it’s not all criticism. I loved the fairy tale aspect of this episode, with its generational storytelling and woodblock-style imagery. It adds depth to the world-building, even if it does remind me a bit of similar elements in Ultraman Z.
The show continues to raise intriguing questions about the nature of kaiju in this universe. I’m curious to see if they’ll explore this further, perhaps even addressing the ethical implications of kaiju extermination that have been a staple of the franchise.
A standout moment for me was the point-of-view sequences for both Arc and the kaiju. The eye effects and the immersive perspective during the fight scenes were fantastic, adding a new dimension to the action.
Lastly, the air of mystery surrounding Mr. Ishido is compelling. His secretive phone call and the hints about the space division of the Kaiju Defense Force are setting up what could be a fascinating subplot.
Despite my criticisms, I remain interested in where Ultraman Arc is heading. The show has potential to bring new elements to the Ultraman franchise, and I’m hopeful it will continue to evolve and surprise us.
