Ultraman Blazar Episode 2: Team Building and Feral Fighting

As an author, artist, and analyzer, I’m back with my thoughts on Ultraman Blazar’s second episode, “The Man Who Created SKaRD.” This installment gives us a deeper look into Gento’s role as a leader and the formation of his team.

The episode revolves around Gento assembling his five-person Kaiju task force. It’s interesting to note that while Gento’s superior tells him to act as if he selected the team himself, at least two members already know this isn’t the case. This little white lie sets up an intriguing dynamic within the group.

I was particularly struck by Johnny Yong Bosch’s voice acting in this episode. There’s a moment where Gento’s voice noticeably changes as he slips into his “captain persona,” which adds depth to his character and hints at the complexities of leadership.

The team itself is diverse and specialized: an intelligence officer, a tech-savvy karate expert, a gadget genius, and a pilot/comms specialist. Their interactions are laced with humor, and I appreciate how Gento’s casual leadership style clashes with some team members’ more by-the-book approach.

Now, let’s talk about the action. The Kaiju of the week, Geidos, has a great fish-inspired design. Blazar’s fight with Geidos further showcases his feral fighting style, which I absolutely love. The contrast between Blazar’s wild, savage movements and the more measured, stiff motions of Ultraman Arc (which I’m watching concurrently) is striking.

A highlight of the fight was Blazar using his energy weapon as a fishing rod to reel in and then spear Gidos. This creative use of his abilities is exactly the kind of imaginative combat I enjoy seeing.

The episode ends with the reveal of Earth Gon, a mech designed to destroy Kaiju before Blazar can engage them. This sets up an interesting conflict, as Gento’s superior wants him to eliminate Blazar, not knowing Gento and Blazar are one and the same.

Overall, this episode does a great job of balancing team dynamics, humor, and action. It also sets up several intriguing plot threads: the tension between Gento’s desire for openness with his team and the secrets he must keep, the potential conflict with Earth Gon, and the mystery surrounding Blazar’s origins and intentions.

What are your thoughts on Blazar’s wild fighting style compared to other Ultras? Do you think it adds to his character, or does it take away from the traditional Ultraman image?

On a personal note, I’m excited to share that I’m working on a tokusatsu-inspired middle-grade book series about magical bugs battling monsters. Keep an eye on MJMunoz.com for updates on its release!
