Ultraman Blazar Episode 9 – “Planet of Music”

Hey tokusatsu fans! MJ Muñoz here, ready to dive into Ultraman Blazar episode 9, “Planet of Music.” This episode offers a fascinating exploration of humanity, alien perspectives, and the power of music. Let’s break it down!

The Power of Music

This episode presents a beautiful answer to the question posed in the previous two-parter: Does humanity deserve to be saved? The resounding answer here is yes, and music plays a crucial role in that affirmation.

The alien quartet, sent to Earth 60 years ago to destroy it, found themselves captivated by human music. This discovery led them to delay their destructive mission, spending decades immersed in Earth’s musical culture. It’s a powerful testament to the transformative nature of art and its ability to bridge even interstellar divides.

Connections to Ultra Q

For Ultra Q fans, this episode is a treat. It ties directly into the classic series, even featuring the iconic Ultra Q theme song in a new, haunting arrangement. The meteor fall effect also pays homage to similar scenes in Ultra Q, creating a sense of continuity within the Ultra universe.

Character Focus: Anri

While this was technically an Anri-focused episode, I felt it could have delved deeper into her character. That said, her actions ultimately drive the resolution, showcasing her importance to the team.

Kaiju and Mecha Action

Garamon, the kaiju in this episode, poses a significant threat to our heroes. Its meteorite-like armor proves challenging for both Blazar and Earth Garon to overcome. The battle scenes effectively demonstrate the danger Garamon represents, elevating the stakes of the conflict.

Thought-Provoking Themes

The episode touches on several intriguing concepts:

  1. The gift of music: I believe music is something humanity was blessed with, and its power to move even alien beings reinforces this idea.
  2. Alien perspectives on time: The quartet’s long lifespan and patience offer an interesting contrast to human short-term thinking.
  3. The humanity in aliens: Through their love of music, we see the “human” side of these extraterrestrial visitors.

Curious Plot Points

A few elements left me wondering:

  • Why did Blazar take control of Gento?
  • What’s the significance of the juice Gento drank?

These might be seeds for future episodes focusing on Yasunobu or Teraki.

Final Thoughts

“Planet of Music” is a standout episode that beautifully intertwines action, emotion, and thought-provoking themes. It showcases the Ultra series’ ability to tell compelling stories that go beyond simple monster-of-the-week formulas.

What did you think about this episode? Did the musical elements resonate with you as much as they did with me? Let me know your thoughts!
