Ultraman Blazar Episode 11 – “Escape”

Hey there, tokusatsu fans! MJ Muñoz here, ready to dive into Ultraman Blazar episode 11, “Escape.” Let me tell you, this episode was a relief after my complaints about episode 10!

A Promising Start

Right off the bat, the first few moments of episode 11 put my mind at ease. It’s clear these writers know what they’re doing – they’ve crafted successful Ultraman stories before, and they’re definitely going somewhere with this plot. I love seeing Gento’s uncertainty about how to deal with Blazar. When Yasunobu asks what they should do if Blazar attacks, Gento’s “play it by ear” response and casual exit speaks volumes.

Impressive Performances

Can we talk about Captain Haruno for a second? Both Masanari Kato (the actor) and Keith Silverstein (the English dub voice) are knocking it out of the park. Kato’s got great presence and physicality, while Silverstein’s voice is spot-on. It’s a perfect match!

Earth Garon’s Great Escape

Earth Garon running away was simultaneously silly, cute, and cool. It showcases the kaiju’s threat level while giving us an adorable moment. And that transition from running to flying using the building in the foreground? Pure tokusatsu magic! It’s these little touches that make the genre so fun.

Blazar’s Fancy Footwork

Blazar blocking with his feet? So cool! I had to feature it in the thumbnail because it’s just that impressive. It’s not something you see often in toku, and it really stood out.

A Two-Minds-One-Body Tour de Force

Now, let’s talk about Hideyoshi Iwata’s performance as Blazar. We’ve seen great two-minds-one-body performances before (think Bruce Campbell in “Evil Dead 2” or Jim Carrey in “Liar Liar”), but Iwata’s suit acting here is on another level. The way he portrays both Gento and Blazar struggling for control is phenomenal. You can really feel the internal conflict, and it adds so much depth to the battle scenes.

Ecological Impact?

One intriguing point: they mentioned that the new meteor kaiju, Gebalga, could be especially bad for Earth’s ecology. I’m curious to see if they’ll explore this further in the next episode. It’s an interesting angle that could add some real stakes to the kaiju battles.

Wrapping Up

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode and I’m looking forward to seeing how Gento and Blazar’s relationship develops. Will they get on the same page, or will their differences continue to cause problems?

Before I sign off, I want to remind you all to check out MJMunoz.com for updates on my tokusatsu-inspired books. I’m working on finalizing a book that draws inspiration from Ultraman and other toku series. In the show notes, you’ll find a link to a story about a little girl who transforms into a giant of light to save her parents – it’s legally distinct from Ultraman, but I think toku fans will dig it!

That’s all for now, folks. Until next time, keep being Ultra!
