Ultraman Blazar Episode 20: “Night of Insects Chirping” – A Return to Form?

Hey there, Ultra fans! MJ here, diving into Ultraman Blazar Episode 20, “Night of Insects Chirping.” After my disappointment with Episode 19, I’m glad to report that this one’s a significant improvement. Let’s break it down!

Character Spotlight: Teraki’s Nuanced Approach

One of the highlights of this episode was Teruaki’s character development. I loved his nuanced approach to dealing with kaiju, recognizing them as living creatures while still doing what’s necessary to protect Earth. His interaction with his father was particularly touching, showing how his values were shaped by his upbringing.

Familiar Themes: A Double-Edged Sword

I couldn’t help but notice similarities between this episode and a classic Ultraseven episode. While it’s interesting to see these callbacks, I’m a bit concerned about repetition within the series. I wonder if the writers could have approached these themes from a fresh angle.

Action and Teamwork: Back on Track

The action sequences in this episode were a marked improvement over the previous one. I enjoyed seeing the team work together effectively, using clever tactics to overcome the insect kaiju threat.

Toy Integration: Less Intrusive

While new power-ups and toys were still present, I felt their integration was less forced this time around. Blazar’s use of the Furin Armor at the climax felt more earned and less like a blatant commercial.

Ethical Dilemmas: A Thoughtful Approach

I appreciated the ethical questions raised in this episode, particularly regarding the treatment of kaiju. It’s these moral complexities that elevate Ultraman beyond simple monster-of-the-week stories.

Final Thoughts

Overall, “Night of Insects Chirping” feels like a return to form for Ultraman Blazar. It balances action, character development, and thoughtful storytelling in a way that had me engaged throughout. I’m hopeful that future episodes will maintain or even improve upon this quality.

What did you think of this episode? Did you notice the callbacks to earlier Ultra series? Let me know in the comments!
