The Book of Three Chapter 7: The Trap – Character Growth in Spiral Castle’s Tunnels

By MJ Muñoz – Author, Artist, Analyzer – MJMunoz.com

Into the Tunnels: Taran and Eilonwy’s Journey Continues

In this chapter, Eilonwy and Taran find themselves trapped in the tunnels beneath Spiral Castle. They move from one tunnel to another after Taran falls into a pit, which turns out to be another passage in this honeycombed fortress controlled by Eilonwy’s evil sorceress aunt, Achren.

While this might seem like a simple transitional chapter where not much happens plot-wise, it actually delivers powerful character moments that push the narrative forward in meaningful ways.

Character Dynamics: Noble Hearts and Growing Bonds

The relationship between Taran and Eilonwy continues to develop in fascinating ways. Unlike some children’s fiction where authors seem determined to force romantic dynamics on young characters, Alexander instead focuses on genuine character growth and mutual respect.

Eilonwy calls Taran “stupid” again, but acknowledges that he’s “kind-hearted,” which she considers more important than intelligence. This comes after Taran repeatedly offers to sacrifice himself so she can escape – putting the mission ahead of his own safety.

As Gwydion had taught him, “the deed is more important than the doer.” Taran takes this lesson to heart, willing to be captured, tortured, or killed if it means the others can escape and the mission can be completed. It’s a moment of true nobility that Eilonwy recognizes and appreciates.

Underground Challenges and Impulsive Reactions

When Eilonwy returns after Taran fears she’s abandoned him, we see his tendency to create his own reality in his head rather than acknowledging what others are actually doing. While she successfully helped Melyngar and the companion escape, Taran gets upset that she couldn’t retrieve their weapons.

Eilonwy’s response – “Do you expect me to do everything for you?” – shows her practical nature and creates a humorous moment amid the tension.

Later, when Eilonwy follows Taran into the pit/tunnel, he yells at her – not because he’s truly angry, but because he’s worried about her safety. His concern manifests as frustration, showing his emotional immaturity even as his noble heart shines through.

Spiral Castle’s Mysteries

The castle itself becomes almost a character, with Eilonwy explaining how it’s “honeycombed” with tunnels and passages. This might be what Tolkien scholars call a “textual ruin” – a hint at a long, twisted history of Spiral Castle, where different occupants over centuries have created various passages, both secret and well-known.

The contrast between the cramped tunnel they were originally traversing and the taller, more navigable one they find themselves in creates both relief and uncertainty – they’re in a better situation physically, but still lost in this labyrinthine fortress.

Looking Forward

The chapter ends with “doubtful Taran” following Eilonwy through the tunnel – a perfect lead-in to Chapter 8: The Barrows. As readers, we share in their uncertainty and anticipation. The way forward is unclear, but as Eilonwy reminds us, all tunnels have a way out. The characters – and we as readers – are primed for what comes next, following the principle that “the way out is through.”

A Personal Update: Mockwing Mayhem

I’ve been working hard on my debut middle-grade novel, Mockwing Mayhem. It’s about magical bugs battling monsters—specifically, a creature called a Mockwing discovers where the magical bugs live and aims to destroy them all. A couple of young, untrained Grobugs seize the opportunity to save one of their mentors and battle this misty bird monster that can hide in fog. IF they can defeat it they still have to survive the REST of the monsters!

The book is finished and I’m currently working with an artist on the cover. I’m aiming for a Summer 2025 release. If you enjoy stories like The Book of Three with real stakes, danger, and triumph over obstacles, I think you’ll enjoy my story too. The book doesn’t talk down to younger readers but addresses challenges in a meaningful way.
