Going Ultra Returns! Ultraman Omega Episode 1 Reaction

By MJ Muñoz

Hey, it’s MJ—author, artist, and analyzer. You can find all my work at MJMuñoz.com. Welcome back to Henshin Inspection! Today I’m talking about Ultraman Omega Episode 1 in the return of Going Ultra for 2025.

The Dub Wait… and the Sub Win

I was holding out hope for a dub, but it never came—so I dove into the subtitled version. And you know what? No regrets. It was fantastic. I’m still hoping future episodes get dubbed sooner, but either way, Ultraman Omega is off to a strong start.

A Hobo from the Stars?

Right off the bat, we meet our new Ultraman: a mysterious alien who’s clearly fallen from the stars and ended up as a wanderer. No human name yet in the show (though I’m pretty sure the promo materials mention one), but we do learn that his true name is Omega.

Omega himself is chill. Like, really chill. In his human form, he walks around with this slow, zen-like calm. Not dumb—just deeply relaxed. Even during battle, when things escalate, he’s still like, “Huh. I thought I could fly.” Not upset. Just… curious.

Enter Kosei and the Kaiju Awakening

Omega pairs up with a human named Kosei Hoshimo—and I like the guy. He’s grounded, relatable, and gives us a good human anchor for the story. What’s especially intriguing is that no one in this world seems to know what kaiju are yet. People refer to the monster as a “giant creature” or “giant monster.” Even Kosei is confused when Omega casually drops the word “kaiju.”

This feels like a world where kaiju are just now awakening. Could be a twist later—maybe there’s ancient history being uncovered, like in Ultraman Ark—but for now, it’s a mystery I’m excited to see unfold.

The Fight: Calm Before the Slugger

The battle in Episode 1 was awesome. Omega is calm even while transformed. At one point, he’s just standing there with his arms down, waiting for the kaiju to attack. And later, when he pauses mid-battle to check on Kosei and a mother with her child, the kaiju smacks him while his back is turned. Little details like that gave the fight real personality.

The Flight and the Slugger Strike

One of my favorite moments was the callback to Omega’s flying confusion. Earlier in the episode, he wonders if he can fly. During the battle, he looks up, sees a bird soaring overhead, and just remembers. He takes off with tactical precision, using flight not just for flair but for advantage.

Then comes the Slugger moment—a classic Ultraman-style energy blade that slices through the kaiju’s drill-nose, which has a five-pointed star design embedded in it. A stylish touch! The slugger returns to him, he charges in, and the final strike lands with impact. It’s sleek, satisfying tokusatsu action.

A Somber Finish

After the kaiju is defeated, we see its eye slowly close as it dies. That quiet moment hit differently. There’s a sadness to it. Sure, the monster was dangerous—it had to be stopped—but its death still leaves you wondering about the deeper themes at play.

What are these kaiju? What’s awakening them? Is there something more tragic behind their rampages?

Closing Thoughts

So far, Ultraman Omega has a lot going for it:

  • A mysterious but chill protagonist
  • A grounded human co-lead
  • A world that’s just discovering kaiju
  • Stylish action with strong emotional beats

The episode started with Omega fighting baby kaiju on some alien world—fun, fast-paced, and visually excellent. The action looked great —dynamic, clean, and well-composited. I’m not sure if Omega was fully CGI or composited with real footage, but either way, the special effects nailed it.

This episode sets up a solid mystery, a unique tone, and a clear promise of more to come. I’m all in. And I’d love to hear what you thought.
