If this is true, I suggest you revisit this series. The beginning of first episode is an absolute masterclass in visual storytelling, and I think this will become clearer as the show progresses. It also sets up the themes and characters of the show very well, and there is a reason Rei is portrayed as almost being numb to his surroundings. You will find that the assertion that ‘nothing happens in the first episode’ is simply untrue.
