Ultraman Z Episode 19 The Last Hero – October 31, 2020

Writer: Toshizo Nemoto

Director: Takanori Tsujimoto

The sky has shattered like glass! From the alternate dimension on the other side, a Terrible-Monster, Baraba appeared! As Ultraman Z and the others struggle in the face of Baraba’s persistent attacks, Ultraman Ace rushes to the scene to help!

What is the surprising relationship between Z and Ace?

ULTRA-BAD

-The Ultraman naming conventions really throw me off. Baraba is a Yapool monster? I thought there was only one kaiju named Yapool and he looks WAY different. Is Yapool a race? That stuff stuck out to me in more of an irritating way, than an entertaining one.

ULTRA-COOL

-I’m assuming the vintage sounding music was from Ace’s show? I loved it. I am not sure if it was the novelty of having such a different type of sound in this show or if I just really enjoy that older style of music, but it was fabulous.

-Baraba’s Snot Rockets!

-That spinning section of the fight where the camera was just circling Baraba while the Ultra’s jumped dove and flew around him was crazy cool.

-Seeing Ace’s arsenal on display was so much fun.

ULTRA-GOOD

-Ace’s message to Z about being the last hero is a profound and solid idea.

ULTRA-DEEP

-Ace told Baraba or Yapool something about the burden of the fallen’s anguish that the victor must carry. That is a slight rephrasing of something that has been brought up in Z before. It actually reminds me of the last episode were I was tired of how the point is being hammered in that it is hard to be the hero or the one who makes the final decision to take one life to spare others. The way Ace just spelled it out felt good and right and like an affirmation of truth from someone who has been through the struggle he is speaking on. There is something to be said for the authenticity and authority that comes with seniority and experience. In short, the same message I chaffed against last episode, I resonated with this episode because of how it was delivered and from who. I want to listen to what Ace says because he is proven, but I am less open to Haruki and Z because they are relatively fresh.

ULTRA-QUESTION

Did you like Ace’s cameo? How do you feel about these old-timers coming in and wrecking kaiju? Do they steal the show from Z?

Also, is the show hinting that Yuka will be a villain? Why does your kaiju fangirl all excited over a dimension-cutting sword?

ULTRA-RANK

4/5

Ultraman Z 19 The Last Hero had amazing fights, and some powerful moments of mentorship between Ace and Z. Ace dispenses sage advice like “Keep your guard up” and while it is easy to laugh of an instruction like that as simple and basic, it is important to remember that mastery comes from building upon fundamentals. Masters perfect every part of their practice and they have to maintain the discipline over time to keep themselves honed to a level of mastery. It always goes back to the fundamentals because without a foundation nothing can stand. Just like how people die when they get killed.
