Radiant Black #3 – April 21, 2021

Writer: Kyle Higgins

Artist: Marcelo Costa

Letterer: Becca Carey

Cover A: Marcelo Costa

Okay, that’s it. Nathan’s getting down to business today: he’s finally working on his novel. All he needs is some solitary writing time—no “helpful” parents, no superhero social media, and definitely no alien voices beaming an unintelligible language into his brain. That’s not too much to ask for, right?

THE BAD

-The conflict between Marshall and Nathan feels a little contrived. Marshall feels as if he is specifically designed to make things harder for Nathan. It’s a delicate dynamic that I find vexing.

THE FUN

-Flying that family to the ball game was sweet and charming. It felt like something Peter would do if he could.

-Marshall’s design work was a lot of fun

-The Chad meme during Nathan’s dream made me laugh out loud. It was a moment of real delight. Thank you for doing that. It was so good that I pulled the title this analysis from it.

THE GOOD

-All the stuff with Nathan trying to figure out is really good. As a writer myself, all that feels so relatable.

-The page showing the writing process while the errant Radiant thoughts were buzzing in his head felt tense and drawn out and tedious all at the same time. The panel layout served the effect so well. I felt like I was there with Nathan experiencing that.

THE QUESTION

Is this a slice of life or a superhero comic? Does it have a strong enough identity? Does it need to escalate to keep your interest?

IS THIS A RECCOMENDED?

No.

This issue was much better than the last, but it isn’t quite there for me. I am intrigued, so I will stick around for next issue, but I did ask the comic shop to take it off of my pull list before I read it. The moment I finished I realized I should have waited.
